Additional Statement regarding the new convention center 12/16/11 (4:38pm):
The Polk County Board of Supervisors, Community Choice Credit Union and Global Spectrum hosted a press conference on Thursday, December 15 to discuss a new marketing and advertising partnership with Community Choice Credit Union as it pertains to the renovation at the Iowa Events Center and Veterans Memorial Auditorium. When the entities began working on this partnership, the main focus was, and continues to be, the ability to enhance how the facility honors veterans. During the press conference, many things were discussed on ways we can continue to honor our veterans. These include the construction of Memorial Hall which uses eight exhibits dedicated to the bravery and allegiance of Iowa servicemen and women and includes images, personal stories and statistics from every conflict since Iowa’s statehood in 1846, a $25,000 donation to Des Moines Vets Center so they can further their programs for veterans, and co-sponsoring events at the facility that will assist our veterans.
Since the press conference, feedback we have received has led us to realize that there is a misunderstanding as to how the partnership with Community Choice Credit Union would impact the existing exterior signage and nostalgia of the building. It is, and has always been, all of our intentions to have the existing Veterans Memorial Auditorium exterior signage remain intact, additionally, new signage will be going up and those details will be unveiled soon. The logo from the Press Conference should be understood as the Convention Center logo, located within Veterans Memorial; it will not be, and was never intended to be, the exterior signage piece.
Community Choice Credit Union, The Polk County Board of Supervisors, and Global Spectrum deeply care about respecting our nation’s veterans, and look forward to using this partnership as a way to expand their honor. We hope you will join us on Monday, January 9, 2012 from 4-7pm to walk through the facility and see firsthand the outstanding memorials that are in place, we are confident that everyone will be excited once they see the improvements.
As your community credit union, Community Choice Credit Union has never been a part of this project to “buy out” the name or the honor of Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Instead, we are engaged in protecting the honor of veterans and expanding it with our participation. We hope that the public will recognize that we are community-focused and deeply care about our actions and the good we can do. We feel strongly that if you ever doubted our intentions, this should speak volumes for what we believe and who we are.
Thank you for being patient with us through this process so that everyone can be fully informed. Thank you on behalf of our local organization whose employees, members and Board are also united with you as members of this great community.
Regarding the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center naming rights (previous statement):
Through the first 57 years the Veterans Memorial Auditorium was utilized as an Auditorium. Polk County then made a decision to renovate the auditorium into a functional space to raise their profile with meeting planners, while making it a priority to develop a space that truly honored veterans. The building is no longer an auditorium, but in fact a new state-of-the-art convention complex.
With the renovation, came changes, including the opportunity for naming rights. We, Community Choice Credit Union, were approached by Global Spectrum, which is the company that manages the Iowa Events Center, as a possible organization that would be a good fit.
Our primary concern was making sure that our veterans were properly honored. It was our belief, that if the building itself was being renovated, the dedication to veterans should also be improved. We believed that if a naming rights sponsor was to exist, it firmly needed to be one that would make sure that honoring veterans came first.
The name Veterans Memorial Auditorium will still remain on the west wall of the exterior of the building. Veterans Memorial Hall will also be signage on the Northwest corner of the exterior as well. This was important to us. It was also important that “Honoring Veterans since 1955” was a part of the overall name of the building going forward. Most importantly, Veterans Memorial Hall provides a much needed improvement in the honoring of our veterans. Timelines, personal stories and statistics from every conflict since Iowa’s statehood in 1846 will be represented. This will be open to the public during regular business hours. Additionally, Community Choice Credit Union will continue to find ways to enhance opportunities for veterans for years to come.
In addition to making sure that a naming sponsor was one that had veterans at the forefront of their decision, Community Choice also wanted to make an immediate impact on also helping veterans by making a $25,000 donation to the Des Moines Vet Center. “A donation of this magnitude, which is the largest such donation we have received, will help provide additional services for veterans and their families by enhancing and developing new programming outside our current services,” said Katina Mach, Team Leader for the Des Moines Vets Center. “We envision utilizing these funds for multiple projects including our Healing Journey program, additional outreach for homeless veterans, and marriage retreats for veterans and their spouse to work on communication skills and conflict resolution.”
This was a very long and thought out process. Community Choice Credit Union is proud of and thankful to all Iowa’s Veterans. We have had and still have veterans on our Board and as employees. Also, many employees have their personal stories of family and friends that are Iowa Veterans. This is why we believed that the name of the sponsor should be an organization that is local, community-focused and member-owned. Community Choice Credit Union was originally formed as State of Iowa Employees Credit Union in 1953. This long history has only reaffirmed our philosophy of “people helping people.”
We hope that you visit the new Veterans Memorial Hall when it opens to the public on January 9, 2012, and allow yourself to see the great tribute that will now be displayed in honor of the commitments made by Iowa’s Veterans.
